Strong Women Make Big Bordeaux Bottles
Monday Mar 23, 2020
Monday Mar 23, 2020
Welcome to another episode of Exploring the Wine Glass. In early March, there was an incredible event happening in New York City, called Strong Women Make Big Bordeaux Bottles and I was privileged to have been invited to attend. The massive on taking involved 65 of New York’s top restaurants & wine bars celebrating women in winemaking, with a limited selection of Bordeaux wines-by-the-glass all poured from double magnum bottles.
Unfortunately, I had hip surgery the previous week and was unable to attend. But thanks to the hard work of Stefanie Schwalb of Gregory and Vine, I was able to interview three of these amazing women. We talk about male vs female roles and views in the wine industry, the romance of pouring from large format, what it’s like living and working in an industry that has such a long tradition and the feeling you get when you see someone enjoying the fruits of your labor.
Caroline Perromat, Château Cerons - @chateaudecerons
Sophie Solnicki-Thierry, Château Forcas Hosten
Rita Jammet, La Caravelle - @lacaravellelistrac @ritajammet
Sylvie Courselle, Château Thieuley - @chateau_thieuley

The Good and the Bad of Open That Bottle Night
Monday Mar 16, 2020
Monday Mar 16, 2020
It’s simple to make any day a special day with wine. It doesn’t even matter if you are together! For this year’s celebration, I got together virtually with some of my wine loving friends and we shared a glass or few as we discussed our thoughts on the holiday.
I get it, you were out of your mind one day and threw all caution to the wind and paid more money for that bottle than you do for food for a month, but special occasions are made by you not the wine. So make today the last time you have to celebrate “Open that bottle” night and live each day as if it’s your last. Drink the dang bottle of wine you dream about whenever you want. Don’t wait for the special day to come to you- reach out and grab the day by the horns and make any day your special day!

Allure of the Pour; Rescued Heart Cellars
Monday Mar 09, 2020
Monday Mar 09, 2020
Hi everyone! If you are a regular listener to my podcast you know that I have a very special place in my heart for dogs. In full disclosure given the choice between being in a room of people or a room of dogs…. Well- I’ll take the dogs – and I am as much an extrovert as can possibly be.
About 8 years ago, Mike and I walked into a home who had a weimaraner named Zero. Two seconds into the home, there was no way I was going to leave this poor baby in that home. So our house once again became a home – but we couldn’t deal with the name so we changed it to Vegas. We figured he was a pretty lucky dog, so the name fit..
A few months ago on Instagram, I ran across an account called Rescued Heart Cellars. I read their story and I was hooked. They have a not for profit brand that helps rescue animals in Arizona. We have been trying to get together for this interview for quite some time and I am so happy to now be able to share their story. But as a warning, this interview is bit of a tear jerker. Between the two of us, we may have had some moments that words were a little tough to get out, but please bear with us, because it is a Wonderful story of a short but Wonderful Life!

Egri Bikaver on Winephabet Street
Monday Mar 02, 2020
Monday Mar 02, 2020
Egri Bikaver is named after the region known for its production, Eger. Eger is a short 2 hour drive east from Budapest. It is located between Budapest and Tokaj, and is the site of the 16th century battle between the Hungarians and the Ottomans. The vineyards in the region are close to the mountains which provides for a cool climate. A region that had to survive Socialism, where quantity not quality was rewarded, Egri has only been working on its quality for about 20 years, but it has come a long way in that short time. So unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and join us today to learn more about this famous Hungarian blend. And please.. take a brief moment of your time to rate and review Exploring the Wine Glass and please don’t hesitate to send me an email about a topic you would like me to discuss on a future podcast.

Master Class; Barbaresco and Barolo
Monday Feb 24, 2020
Monday Feb 24, 2020
Thanks for tuning in to another episode of Exploring the Wine Glass. Today is all about Nebbiolo! I had the honor to attend BBWO2020 in NYC in February with over 200 wineries present. The event was hosted by the Conzorzio di Tutela Barolo, Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Dogliani which, has been protecting and promoting the identity of their wines since 1934.
The event included both Barolo and Barbaresco. Although both are made with 100% Nebbiolo, they are named after their distinct regions in Piedmont, Italy. When tasting Nebbiolo, you can expect a wine that is full of aromatics including florals, cherries, and dark berries along with flavors of earth, forest floor and dark fruits. The tannins are high as well as the acidity, but are balanced so well, you crave the next sip.
Join in today and learn about the regions, soils and the regulations of the Geographical Definitions as explained by Alessandro Masnaghetti.

Causes of the Decline in Wine Consumption
Monday Feb 17, 2020
Monday Feb 17, 2020
Today on Exploring the Wine Glass, I sit down with several of my wine loving friends and we discuss a very scary topic. One that is rather hard to believe is actually happening, but numbers don’t lie. There has been a decline in the consumption of wine throughout 2019, and the trend seems to be continuing into 2020.
There are many beliefs as to why this downfall is occurring and like many things in the today’s world, it is blamed on those darn millennials! Do they really have that much power? What about this generation is causing the wine industry to stop and take notice and quite honestly begin to quake in their shoes? I am not willing to rule them out, but I also am not so inclined to think that this trend is based solely on them. There has to be more to it, and I bring these additional topics up to my panel to get their opinions. And for fun, don’t forget we always end these episodes with a riddle! Will you be able to solve it before they do?
On the show with me today:
Maria Ferraro Beardsley of Wine and Cheese Friday
Michael Kelly of California Wines and Wineries
John Taylor of Pairs with Life
Debbie Gioquindo of Hudson Valley Wine Goddess

Do You Have Wine Intolerance?
Monday Feb 10, 2020
Monday Feb 10, 2020
Today I sit down with David Meadows, entrepreneur and founder of Pure Wine. Many people are unable to enjoy wine as they have adverse reactions to it. Some of these intolerance include headaches, congestion, skin flush and hangovers. Although I am not a believer that sulfites are a cause for these reactions, I will admit that histamines in wine can cause these reactions to a select population of consumers. During the conversation, we do get a bit geeky- heck, you know that is going to happen when you get two scientists together, but we break down the science so that it isn’t so intimidating as to how histamines effect people. To learn more about Pure wine, visit their website at www.drinkpurewine.com I hope you enjoy the conversation and learn a bit about how your body works.
During the conversation, David has several visuals to aid in his explanation. Please tune into Dracaena Wines’ YouTube channel at the following time estimates to see them:
Product in use: 21 minutes
Varietal Chart: 36 minutes
Product options: 46 minutes

Monday Feb 03, 2020
Welcome to Exploring the Wine Glass. Today I sit down with Daniel Brennan, owner and winemaker at Decibel Wines in New Zealand. He prides himself on producing wines using classic practices, minimal intervention, a community based attitude. Combining the classic practices with modern in the vineyard and the winery Daniel not only is inspired to make great wine, but to preserve our great planet. His fruit comes from Hawkes Bay, and Martinborough but is beginning to make a name for himself right here in the United States. Today, he shares his story of how a Philly boy who grew up in the restaurant world, went from a Political and philosophy eduction to being a band manager and ultimately ending up half way around the world making wine.

Dornfelder on Winephabet Street
Monday Jan 27, 2020
Monday Jan 27, 2020
Hey everyone! Thanks for listening to Exploring the Wine Glass. Today we head back to Winephabet Street. Today’s letter is D and it stands for Dornfelder. An interesting grape that was created when August Herold crossed Helfensteiner with Heroldrebe in 1956. Typically, the red wines of Germany are known for their lighter color and body. However, Dornfelder led the way for producing the more internationally accepted style of deep color. While you are sipping and listening, please rate, review and subscribe to Exploring the Wine Glass to help others find us. So sit back unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and enjoy learning about this not so well known grape variety, Dornfelder.

Turkish Wine 101
Monday Jan 20, 2020
Monday Jan 20, 2020
When I went through the WSET L2 class, at no point was Turkish wine brought into the conversation.
Quite some time ago, I came across a person on Twitter that I decided to follow because she was always talking about Turkish wine. Through each post, her enthusiasm and passion for the wine showed through and anyone who knows me knows I love to share someone’s passion for wine.
Andrea Lemieux, aka The Quirky Cork, began enjoying wine while she lived in Washington DC, but it wasn’t until she moved to Turkey for a job that she fell in love with it. Join us as she tells me about the long history of wine making in Turkey, teaches me how to pronounce those difficult to pronounce Turkish wine grapes, and why we can’t find these wines in the United States. She also will provide tips of the best places to visit on your next trip to Turkey.
If you enjoy this, please take the time to rate, review and subscribe. iTunes suggests podcasts based on these star reviews and each new review can help other winelovers find our podcast.
