Petite Sirah on Winephabet Street
Monday Mar 08, 2021
Monday Mar 08, 2021
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today we return to Winephabet Street to learn about the letter P, Petite Sirah! Often confused by new winelovers as just a smaller version of Syrah or Shiraz, it is in fact a completely different variety.
Petite Sirah, also known as Durif, is a man-made variety that resulted from a cross between Syrah and Peloursin. The objective of the cross was to make a grape variety that is resistant to powdery mildew. It was first brought to California in 1884 by Charles McIver and had a similar history to Zinfandel during Prohibition thanks to its ability to travel cross country well.
I had the privilege of sitting down with Steve Tenbrink of Tenbrink Cellars and his daughter Lisa Howard of Tolenas Winery in Suisun Valley, California. Petite Sirah Capital of the World.

Weird But True Wine Laws
Monday Mar 01, 2021
Monday Mar 01, 2021
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I am sitting down with a group of wine writing friends to discuss some crazy wine laws. We know that the 3-tier system is a crazy enough, but these laws are downright insane! We can’t even begin to figure out what was going through the legislatures’ minds when they wrote these laws. For example: In New Jersey, if you are arrested for drunk driving, you have to pay the fine, BUT you are no longer eligible for vanity plates! Oh the horror! We had a few laughs on this one and I hope you do too!

It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I sit down with David Parker founder and CEO of Benchmark Wine Group, located in Napa Valley. Benchmark Wine Group is the leading source of fine and rare wine for wine retailers, restaurants and collectors around the world.
We discuss how to begin collecting wine, some suggestions for not only varietals but regions that will age well and provide the best bang for your buck if you add them to your collection. David also shares his knowledge of the best conditions to store wine to allow them to age properly and how all wines worthy of collecting do not need to be hundreds of dollars.

Monday Feb 15, 2021
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today we are travelling virtually to Italy thanks to a Master Class arranged by Napa Valley Wine Academy, America’s premier wine school. Franciacorta is located in the Lombardy region of northern Italy within the Brescia province, the region is nestled at the foothills of the Alps. Franciacorta refers not only to the name of the region, but the wine and the style of production. Franciacorta, like Champagne, makes their sparkling wines using the traditional French méthode champenoise, or “Classic Method,” with the second fermentation in the bottle.
Join me as we dive into the very special region that produces exceptional sparkling wines led by Peter Marks Master of Wine and Giammario Villa Master Taster.

RIDDLE: Why are hyenas the healthiest of all animals? (scroll down for answer)
It’s been a while since we have gotten together, so I figured what better way to welcome a new year than with wine and friends. During the discussion, we give our top wine of 2020, what wines we drank to ring in the new year, and what weird traditions we celebrate to boot the old year out. Because, quite honestly, there hasn’t been a year, we all are happier to see gone than 2020.

Val d'Oca Prosecco

Monday Jan 04, 2021
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass!
Today I am virtually taking you to Italy! Where the prosecco flows and the food is phenomenal. I seriously don’t think there is any place on this earth that has better food than Italy. Today, we are talking about Val’dOca, a cooperative winery that was established in 1952. The cooperative was created by 129 founding members in order to revive the economy after it was devastated by WWII. The zoom meeting was hosted by Susannah Gold of Vigneto Communications. We spoke with Lorenzo Rispoli, Export Manager of Val D'Oca, learned how to make prosecco cocktails with Amy Zavatto, Author/Journalist, Prosecco Made Me Do It: 60 Seriously Sparkling Cocktail and drooled over Silvia Baldini, Chef, Owner Strawberry and Sage risotto! There is a lot happening in this episode, so I hope you enjoy!
