The Other White Grape in the FLX AVA

It’s Monday! Let’s raise a glass to another week! It’s time to unscrew, uncork, or saber a bottle and let’s begin exploring the wine glass!

Today on the podcast I am sharing a recording from a virtual tasting that I attended hosted by the New York Wine and Grape Foundation. When we hear Finger Lakes wine, I think the majority of us immediately think of Riesling. And although the Finger Lakes makes quality Riesling, there is another white grape that does exceptionally well there. Chardonnay. In fact, it is the second most widely planted variety in the region. 

The tasting was moderated by Dan Belmont, American Wine Expert and holds a WSET L3 certification.

I was sent three sample Chardonnay’s from

Damiani Wine Cellars

Alex Rosanelli, Winemaker
Hounds Tree Wines

Alongside the Chardonnay, I received cheddar cheese from Cabot cheese. A compliment of different cheddar cheeses that will pair perfectly with the three Chardonnays.

I had the pleasure and luck to sit down with John Wagner of Wagner Vineyards in the Finger Lakes. His family has been involved in the Finger Lakes wine industry for generations. Not only does he know the history of the region, but he knows how to make exceptional wines. Wagner Vineyards was named 2019 New York Wine Classic Winery of the Year, after 4 of his Rieslings received Double Gold! Ugni Blanc is also known as Trebbiano and an Italian wine grape, one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world. Its high acidity makes it important in Cognac. As a podcaster, I of course listen to other podcasts, and one of my favorites is Glass in Session by Val Caruso. Quite some time ago, she did an episode on Tavel and her passion for the wine and region was contagious. Do We Need Different Wine Glasses for Every Variety?

Last month I read an article in Wine Enthusiast written by Kelly A. Magyarics titled "Is Hyperspecific Wine Stemware Worth It?" As I was reading it, I looked at the glasses in my china cabinet, where I have loads of wine glasses, that remain in the cabinet more than on my table, I thought this is a great topic for a Wine Writers' Wrap Up.

What the Heck are Shrubs? Wicked Bess

It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I am talking Shrubs with William Caines, owner and head shrub maker at Wicked Bess. 
Will reached out to me on Instagram and asked if I would be interested in sampling his shrubs. After telling him I was completely clueless about shrubs but was interested, he graciously sent me three samples.  I proceeded to make an IG video of me mixing a drink; of which I completely messed up the proportions. But damn, that drink was good! Will shared my video and mentioned I used too much shrub, I laughed and then decided the only way I'd learn about shrubs was to have him on the podcast and share his knowledge.

Talking Armenian Wine with Storica Wines

It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I am sharing a glass with Ara Sarkissian from Storica Wines.

Storica Wines is located in Armenia and I was so excited to learn about long wine history (about 6,000 years of history) of Armenian wine and how the geopolitical conflict and politics affected the history of winemaking in the country. And fo course we did a little tasting! 

We talk about the oldest wine producing facility that has been found. The Areni cave complex dates back to around 4000 BC as well as some of the indigenous grapes that are cultivated. Including the most common red grape Areni and  the white grape Voskehat.
