Does a High ABV Equate to a Bad Wine?
Monday Aug 31, 2020
Monday Aug 31, 2020
Today I am back with another Paso Hangout thanks to Paso Robles Wine Alliance. We all love wine and what makes wine awesome is, lets face it.. the alcohol! But alcohol can get out to hand.
Listen in as Wes Hagen, winemaker for J. Wilkes Wines and the godfather of Paso Robles, Gary Eberle of Eberle Winery talk about how wines need to be made in a specific way and the high alcohol wines are on their way out. Really? I don’t think so… and neither do they! In reality, balance is what makes the difference and alcohol needs to be part of the formula to create a balanced wine.
Thank you again to the Paso Robles Wine Alliance for putting this conversation together. You can find out more about them by visiting their website pasowine.com. So lets unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and lets listen in as these three discuss alcohol in wine.

Drew Nenow; Nenow Family Wines Paso Robles
Monday Aug 24, 2020
Monday Aug 24, 2020
Today on Allure of the Pour I am sitting down with Drew Nenow of Nenow Family Wines in Paso Robles! I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Drew. We found out we have a lot in common, between growing up with a parent who is an electrician, to both being volleyball coaches… oh and a little thing like being a winemaker in Paso Robles.
I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. If you enjoy this episode, please take a moment to rate and review the podcast. I know I ask every week- but it takes less than a minute and it means so much! Thanks! So now, unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and lets talk Paso Wine!

Sherry; Much More Than Grandma's Sweet After Dinner Drink
Monday Aug 17, 2020
Monday Aug 17, 2020
Jerez is one of the oldest wine growing regions in the world, but in all honesty, I know very little about it. During the WSET Level 2 class, sherry was covered, but very briefly. I have not had many sherries, and I have promised myself that I will attempt to make myself more familiar with it.
So when I heard that there was going to be an episode of Raid (y)Our Cellar dedicated to Sherry, I knew it was one I had to listen in. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. As I learned, there is a Sherry for an occasion and unlike my initial thoughts, it is not all grandma’s sweet after dinner drink. From the dry and light, Fino wines, to the subtly bitter taste of a cold glass of Manzanilla or the sweetness and caramel hints of a Cream. Sherry truly is a wine that can be paired with any food pairing.
So unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle, sit down and enjoy the conversation. Sherry is a wine that is misunderstood by the market and I hope this episode helps you navigate your way through the confusing waters.

Clément Pierlot of Champagne Pommery
Monday Aug 10, 2020
Monday Aug 10, 2020
I am so excited to share today’s episode with you. I am a huge Champagne fan, actually I am a fan of all bubbles, but there is something about Champagne that is special. They will you that it is the soil and the weather. They will tell you that it is the strict regulations on how they can process the wine. They will tell you that it is the pruning methods or the second fermentation in bottle.
I cannot guarantee exactly what it makes Champagne special, but I can guarantee that it is. So when Champagne Pommery reached out to me to ask if I was interested in interviewing the 10th cellar master and discuss one of the oldest Champagne houses, I of course was interested! But when they told me that Champagne Pommery is now producing California Sparkling, let me tell you it was a no brainer. I wanted to hear the story!
Please take a moment to subscribe rate and review Exploring the Wine Glass and when a wine loving friend asks you what podcast you listen to; we’d appreciate a mention! So now, it’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and talk Champagne!

Surfing and Winemaking
Monday Aug 03, 2020
Monday Aug 03, 2020
Today, I am sharing another Paso Zoom Hangout with you, put on by the Paso Robles Wine Alliance. There are so many things that I love about Paso. Yes, the wines are phenomenal and there is so much to do beyond wine tasting, but it is the people that truly make it special. Where else can you talk about the correlation of wine and surfing than right here in Paso!
Listen in as Josh Beckett of Peachy Canyon Winery, Phillip Pfunder of Law Estate Wines, and Patrick Muran of Niner Wine Estates join Christopher Taranto of the Paso Robles Wine Alliance. They discuss how the art and science of surfing aligns with the art and science of winemaking.
If you would like to find other Paso Hangouts to listen to or watch live, head to pasowine.com, the best place to explore Paso Robles. While you are listening, please remember to subscribe rate and review and tell your friends to listen to Exploring the Wine Glass podcast. Jura on Winephabet Street
Monday Jul 27, 2020
Monday Jul 27, 2020
Today, we return to Winephabet Street where the letter of the day is J and it stands for Jura. Please take the time to swipe on your phone and leave a rating and review. We really rely on those reviews to move us up the charts within the podcast aggregators so that they recommend us to others. And if you know of someone who is into wine, we would greatly appreciate you mentioning us to them. I have found some of my favorite podcasts to listen to by word of mouth!
The Jura is one of the smallest wine regions in France, at approximately 2,000 ha (almost 5,000 acres). It is located on the far eastern edge of France, sandwiched between Burgundy and the Swiss Alps. In many articles about the region, thanks to its remoteness, the wines are classified as “weird” “obscure” “offbeat” “geeky”or the “missing piece for winelovers.”
Thoughout this series, I have found so many wine regions and varietals that have been interesting, but I have to say that the Jura is the one region that has made me stop and say “That is so cool” more times than any other! So sit back, unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and lets get into the Jura region of France.

Cariñena; A Region to Watch
Monday Jul 20, 2020
Monday Jul 20, 2020
The Cariñena Denominación de Origen (DO), situated about halfway between Madrid and Barcelona, was created in 1932 making it one of the oldest protected wine regions in Europe. Vineyards with the Cariñena region range from 400m(~1300 feet) above sea level to about 800m (~2600 feet) in the Sierra de la Virgen mountains. Of the four DOs located in the region of Aragón, Cariñena is the largest. Cariñena DO is in the northeast region of the country, and is not only the geographical name, but also the grape itself. Possibly more commonly known as Carignan, Cariñena is no longer the most planted grape in the region. That honor is now held by Garnacha, which is believed to also have its origins in this region.
I had the privilege to sit in on a Zoom virtual tasting sponsored by Gregory and Vine to discuss the wines of the region. OOH! and of course I got to drink some exceptional wine. My sample was from Bodegas Paniza who produces single varietal wines representing the best terroirs of the region.
I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did, and trust me when I tell you that Cariñena is a region to watch and such an incredible value. So, unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and lets virtually visit Cariñena!

Talking Finger Lakes History with John Wagner
Monday Jul 13, 2020
Monday Jul 13, 2020
When I asked the Finger Lakes Wine Alliance who I should speak to about the history of the region, they directed me to John Wagner of Wagner Vineyards. I was lucky enough to have John jump on a Zoom conversation with me. His family has been involved in the Finger Lakes wine industry for generations. Not only does he know the history of the region, but he knows how to make exceptional wines. Wagner Vineyards was named 2019 New York Wine Classic Winery of the Year, after 4 of his Rieslings received Double Gold! I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.
Now, unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and lets discuss the history of the Finger Lakes!

Bargain Bordeaux
Monday Jul 06, 2020
Monday Jul 06, 2020
Today I am sharing another Raid Y(our) Cellar virtual tasting. This one is near and dear to me. When I heard they were go to discuss Bordeaux, my ears perked up, but when they continued to say that they would be discussing Bordeaux under $100 I almost fell off my chair.
The pandemic is an awful thing and there are so many negatives that have occurred because of it. And sadly, one of those negatives is that en primeur was cancelled. It is during this time that wine professionals from around the world fly to Bordeaux to barrel sample the newest vintage. And let me tell you from experience, it is an incredible event.
After the tastings are over, the release price is determined by the reviews that the wine receives. With this year’s tasting cancelled, it makes it very difficult to determine a price. So the odds are that the wines will be released at a lower than typical point. And although that is bad news for the chateaux, it could be very advantageous to someone who has wanted to begin collecting Bordeaux wines.
The conversation you will hear today is not about purchasing futures of the 2019 vintage, but rather previous vintages are available at a bargain prices. Wines that you can begin your collection with and not break the bank.
These virtual tastings are free to join but you may want to contribute in support of the United Sommeliers Foundation, a non for profit organization that helps wine industry professionals during times of hardship. If you’d like to make a donation you can click here.
Now, unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and lets discuss the bargain Bordeaux!

Monday Jun 29, 2020

Welcome to another episode of Winephabet Street. The letter of the day is I and it stands for Indigenous Yeast. We had the distinct honor of having guest host and sponsor Guy Pacurar, owner of Fathers and Daughters Cellars.
One of many decisions a winemaker must make when they are processing their wine is what yeast they will use to ferment their wine. There is a multitude of commercial yeast that we can choose from. Each one with a specific characteristic that helps provide the profile that we want in the finished product. However, we can choose not to use commercial yeast, and rely on the indigenous or wild yeast that come into the winery on the fruit.
Join us as we discuss the positives and negatives to using both commercial and indigenous yeast and learn about Fathers and Daughters history. Guy provided me with a sample of his Ella’s Reserve Pinot Noir and it was wonderful to be sipping it as he told us the story of how it got its name. I really enjoyed the conversation and I hope you do also!
Before we get into the interview I want to share another 5 star review with you! This one titled “Easy Listening” One of the most user-friendly wine podcasts around. Lori asks thoughtful questions without wine geek speak! I am enjoying the “behind the scenes” info on what goes into great wine today. Look forward to catching up on past episodes.” Why not be like Killer Jones 99 and share your thoughts about Exploring the Wine Glass?!
It is time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and enjoy the podcast!
