Exploring the Wine Glass

Hi everyone! If you are a regular listener to my podcast you know that I have a very special place in my heart for dogs. In full disclosure given the choice between being in a room of people or a room of dogs…. Well- I’ll take the dogs – and I am as much an extrovert as can possibly be.

About 8 years ago, Mike and I walked into a home who had a weimaraner named Zero. Two seconds into the home, there was no way I was going to leave this poor baby in that home. So our house once again became a home – but we couldn’t deal with the name so we changed it to Vegas. We figured he was a pretty lucky dog, so the name fit..

A few months ago on Instagram, I ran across an account called Rescued Heart Cellars. I read their story and I was hooked.  They have a not for profit brand that helps rescue animals in Arizona. We have been trying to get together for this interview for quite some time and I am so happy to now be able to share their story.  But as a warning, this interview is bit of a tear jerker. Between the two of us, we may have had some moments that words were a little tough to get out, but please bear with us, because it is a Wonderful story of a short but Wonderful Life!

Thanks for tuning in to another episode of Exploring the Wine Glass. Today is all about Nebbiolo! I had the honor to attend BBWO2020 in NYC in February with over 200 wineries present. The event was hosted by the Conzorzio di Tutela Barolo, Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Dogliani which, has been protecting and promoting the identity of their wines since 1934.

The event included both Barolo and Barbaresco. Although both are made with 100% Nebbiolo, they are named after their distinct regions in Piedmont, Italy.  When tasting Nebbiolo, you can expect a wine that is full of aromatics including  florals, cherries,  and dark berries along with flavors of earth, forest floor and dark fruits.  The tannins are high as well as the acidity, but are balanced so well, you crave the next sip.

Today on Exploring the Wine Glass, I sit down with several of my wine loving friends and we discuss a very scary topic. One that is rather hard to believe is actually happening, but numbers don’t lie.  There has been a decline in the consumption of wine throughout 2019, and the trend seems to be continuing into 2020.

There are many beliefs as to why this downfall is occurring and like many things in the today’s world, it is blamed on those darn millennials! Do they really have that much power? What about this generation is causing the wine industry to stop and take notice and quite honestly begin to quake in their shoes? I am not willing to rule them out, but I also am not so inclined to think that this trend is based solely on them. There has to be more to it, and I bring these additional topics up to my panel to get their opinions. And for fun, don’t forget we always end these episodes with a riddle! Will you be able to solve it before they do?

Today I sit down with David Meadows, entrepreneur and founder of Pure Wine.  Many people are unable to enjoy wine as they have adverse reactions to it. Some of these intolerance include headaches, congestion, skin flush and hangovers. Although I am not a believer that sulfites are a cause for these reactions, I will admit that histamines in wine can cause these reactions to a select population of consumers.  During the conversation, we do get a bit geeky- heck, you know that is going to happen when you get two scientists together, but we break down the science so that it isn’t so intimidating as to how histamines effect people. He prides himself on producing wines using classic practices, minimal intervention, a community based attitude. Combining the classic practices with modern in the vineyard and the winery Daniel not only is inspired to make great wine, but to preserve our great planet. His fruit comes from Hawkes Bay, and Martinborough but is beginning to make a name for himself right here in the United States. Today, he shares his story of how a Philly boy who grew up in the restaurant world, went from a Political and philosophy eduction to being a band manager and ultimately ending up half way around the world making wine.

An interesting grape that was created when August Herold crossed Helfensteiner with Heroldrebe in 1956. Typically, the red wines of Germany are known for their lighter color and body. When I went through the WSET L2 class, at no point was Turkish wine brought into the conversation.

Something new for the podcast today.  Life is hectic and sometimes you need to do things out of necessity.  I was unable to produce an episode for this week, so I thought I would go back and find one of my most popular episodes and provide an opportunity for my new listeners to hear it and my dedicated listeners to remember the fun we had in discussing the outrageously priced bottle of wine. 

I got together with some wine writing friends to discuss a topic in the wine world that has been hitting the headlines quite a bit lately.  How much is too much to spend on bottle of wine? The topic was triggered by the announcement of Liber Pater declared that he was going to produce 550 bottles of his 2015 vintage and release them for $34K.

Now, that may be a price tag that the majority of us couldn’t even contemplate spending, but then on Instagram, a post by Amber Burke of winetraveleats, posted a photo of a bottle of Nickel & Nickel, with a hefty price tag of $185. This triggered a rather long back and back debate over whether the wine was worth it. 

With that, I opted to get my friends together and have a little heart to heart about what we are willing to spend on a bottle of wine. And is any bottle worth $34K.
