Exploring the Wine Glass

I am so excited to share today’s episode with you. I am a huge Champagne fan, actually I am a fan of all bubbles, but there is something about Champagne that is special. They will you that it is the soil and the weather. They will tell you that it is the strict regulations on how they can process the  wine. They will tell you that it is the pruning methods or the second fermentation in bottle.

I cannot guarantee exactly what it makes Champagne special, but I can guarantee that it  is. So when Champagne Pommery reached out to me to ask if I was interested in interviewing the 10^th cellar master and discuss one of the oldest Champagne houses, I of course was interested! But when they told me that Champagne Pommery is now producing California Sparkling, let me tell you it was a no brainer. I wanted to hear the story!

Surfing and Winemaking

Jura on Winephabet Street

Today, we return to Winephabet Street where the letter of the day is J and it stands for Jura.  Please take the time to swipe on your phone and leave a rating and review. We really rely on those reviews to move us up the charts within the podcast aggregators so that they recommend us to others. And if you know of someone who is into wine, we would greatly appreciate you mentioning us to them. I have found some of my favorite podcasts to listen to by word of mouth!

The Jura is one of the smallest wine regions in France, at approximately 2,000 ha (almost 5,000 acres). It is located on the far eastern edge of France, sandwiched between Burgundy and the Swiss Alps. In many articles about the region, thanks to its remoteness, the wines are classified as “weird” “obscure” “offbeat” “geeky”or the “missing piece for winelovers.”

Thoughout this series, I have found so many wine regions and varietals that have been interesting, but I have to say that the Jura is the one region that has made me stop and say “That is so cool” more times than any other! So sit back, unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and lets get into the Jura region of France.

Cariñena; A Region to Watch

The Cariñena Denominación de Origen (DO), situated about halfway between Madrid and Barcelona, was created in 1932 making it one of the oldest protected wine regions in Europe. Vineyards with the Cariñena region range from 400m(~1300 feet) above sea level to about 800m (~2600 feet) in the Sierra de la Virgen mountains. Of the four DOs located in the region of Aragón, Cariñena is the largest. Cariñena DO is in the northeast region of the country, and is not only the geographical name, but also the grape itself. Possibly more commonly known as Carignan, Cariñena is no longer the most planted grape in the region. That honor is now held by Garnacha, which is believed to also have its origins in this region. 

I had the privilege to sit in on a Zoom virtual tasting sponsored by Gregory and Vine to discuss the wines of the region. OOH! and of course I got to drink some exceptional wine. My sample was from Bodegas Paniza who produces single varietal wines representing the best terroirs of the region.

Talking Finger Lakes History with John Wagner

When I asked the Finger Lakes Wine Alliance who I should speak to about the history of the region, they directed me to John Wagner of Wagner Vineyards. I was lucky enough to have John jump on a Zoom conversation with me. His family has been involved in the Finger Lakes wine industry for generations. Not only does he know the history of the region, but he knows how to make exceptional wines. Bargain Bordeaux

Today I am sharing another Raid Y(our) Cellar virtual tasting. This one is near and dear to me. When I heard they were go to discuss Bordeaux, my ears perked up, but when they continued to say that they would be discussing Bordeaux under $100 I almost fell off my chair.

The pandemic is an awful thing and there are so many negatives that have occurred because of it. And sadly, one of those negatives is that en primeur was cancelled. It is during this time that wine professionals from around the world fly to Bordeaux to barrel sample the newest vintage. And let me tell you from experience, it is an incredible event. 

After the tastings are over, the release price is determined by the reviews that the wine receives. With this year’s tasting cancelled, it makes it very difficult to determine a price. So the odds are that the wines will be released at a lower than typical point. And although that is bad news for the chateaux, it could be very advantageous to someone who has wanted to begin collecting Bordeaux wines.

The conversation you will hear today is not about purchasing futures of the 2019 vintage, but rather previous vintages are available at a bargain prices. Wines that you can begin your collection with and not break the bank.

Talking Indigenous Yeast with Fathers & Daughters Cellars on Winephabet Street

Welcome to another episode of Winephabet Street. The letter of the day is I and it stands for  Indigenous Yeast. We had the distinct honor of having guest host and sponsor Guy Pacurar, owner of Fathers and Daughters Cellars.

One of many decisions a winemaker must make when they are processing their wine is what yeast they will use to ferment their wine. There is a multitude of commercial yeast that we can choose from. Each one with a specific characteristic that helps provide the profile that we want in the finished product. However, we can choose not to use commercial yeast, and rely on the indigenous or wild yeast that come into the winery on the fruit.

Join us as we discuss the positives and negatives to using both commercial and indigenous yeast and learn about Fathers and Daughters history. Guy provided me with a sample of his Ella’s Reserve Pinot Noir and it was wonderful to be sipping it as he told us the story of how it got its name. I really enjoyed the conversation and I hope you do also!

Brunello, Barolo and Barbaresco!

Drinking IPA with Jeremy Kosmicki, brewmaster at Founders Brewing

Man cannot live on wine alone! No matter how much we try! But in all seriousness, as a winemaker, we admittedly drink a lot of wine, but sometimes our palate just craves something different. When that happens, we turn to beer and usually IPA. I can be found on untapped as lodolphin. If you are on that app, give me a follow and you’ll see exactly how much IPA I drink!

While we have been in confinement, virtual has taken on a whole new meaning. I have sat down and virtually clinked with many friends and although it doesn’t replace the in real life experience, it is really nice to at least be able to see the faces.
