Monday Oct 22, 2018
The sweet wines of Quarts de Chaume (GAAR DU CHOME) have nearly infinite aging potential. Made with the Loire’s hallmark Chenin Blanc grape, they offer complex, nuanced flavors that can pair with both rich savory dishes and desserts. This appellation is located on a small parcel of land in a single commune on the right bank of the Layon: Rochefort-sur-Loire within the Anjou district.

Today, I have a special treat. I had the privilege of attending a very intimate tasting hosted by Tyson Stelzer in support of Wine Australia and Wine Tasmania. Tyson Stelzer is a multi-award winning wine writer, television presenter and international speaker. He was named The International Wine & Spirit Communicator of the Year 2015 in the International Wine & Spirit Competition, The Wine Communicators of Australia Australian Wine Communicator of the Year 2015 and 2013 and The International Champagne Writer of the Year 2011 in The Louis Roederer International Wine Writers’ Awards. I know you are going to enjoy this interview and I’m hoping it peeks your curiosity to seek out some wines from Tasmania.

James Suckling; Tasting the Greatness of the Andes
Monday Oct 08, 2018
Monday Oct 08, 2018
When the email arrived in my mailbox asking me if I was interested in attending the James Sucklinng Great Wines of the Andes in NYC, I immediately responded yes. This event was the fift anniversary and had more than 100 leading producers from Chile, Argentin and Uruguay.
The podcast was recorded in a room filled with over 500 people, so there is a lot of background noise. I have done my best to lower that noise, but alas it is still there. I hope you can listen through it, since there is really some interesting stories and wines!

Winephabet Street; P is for Picpoul
Monday Sep 24, 2018
Monday Sep 24, 2018
Picpoul can trace its history back to the 17th century when, along with Clairette, it was the basis of the then hugely popular Picardan that was exported from the Languedoc to Northern Europe. Its plantings dwindled after the onslaught of phylloxera at the end of the 19th century as growers resorted to hardier and more disease resistant grapes.
Records from the early 17th century indicate that it was blended with Clairette (another white Rhône varietal) to form the popular sweet Picardan wine (not to be confused with the Châteauneuf du Pape varietal of the same name) which was exported by Dutch wine traders from Languedoc throughout Northern Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. After the phylloxera invasion at the end of the 19th century, Picpoul was not widely replanted. Today it is best known from Picpoul de Pinet, the crisp light green wine of the Pinet Region in the Côteaux de Languedoc.

Get to Know Cabernet Franc
Monday Sep 17, 2018
Monday Sep 17, 2018
As the founder of the now internationally recognized wine holiday #CabFrancDay, I am on a mission to get the word out to as many people as possible about how great a variety this grape is! I am thrilled to see that there are more and more wineries that are producing a single varietal Cabernet Franc wine! (of course, I think ours is the one you should try!)
I hope you enjoy this brief introduction to Cabernet Franc and #CabFrancDay!

Cooperage; the art and science of the wine barrel
Monday Sep 10, 2018
Monday Sep 10, 2018
On this episode I delve into the world of wine barrels. I take you through the process of choosinng the tree, which parts of the tree are used and how the barrel comes to its shape. There is so much that occurs behind the scenes and it can take up to three years before a barrel is ready for sale. These beautiful pieces of art impart a huge characteristic onto the wines they hold. As promised, here is the photo of the barrel parts. And please be sure to check out the video on Youtube of Saury Cooperage.

It is primarily known for its white wines made from a blend of mostly Grechetto and Trebbiano, which is sold under the Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) Orvieto and Orvieto Classico. Blended red wine and eight varietal reds are sold under the Rosso Orvietano DOC.
The Orvieto zone is in the province of Terni in the south-western corner of Umbria. To Decant or Not to Decant; Wine Writer WrapUp
Monday Aug 27, 2018
Monday Aug 27, 2018
This week I sat down with a group of wine writer friends for another edition of Wine Writer’s Wrap Up. The topic was all about decanting. It may not be such a volatile topic, but people seem to have a definitive opinion on wether or not you should decant and how long. Give it a listen and afterwards, let me know what your thoughts are. Do you decant your wines? When and why?
On this episode:
Amber Burke - Winetraveleats.com
Nick Berube - WineCommGuy.com
Michael Kelly - californiawinesandwineries.com
John Taylor - pairswithlife.net
1. What’s everyone drinking?
2. Episode 6 - To Decant or Not to Decant
~Do you decant your wines on a regular basis?
~Dr. Gavin Sacks, an associate professor at Cornell University’s school of Department of Food Science, notes that separating clarified wine from the solids suspended in the bottle was the original motivation behind decanting wine
~Do you decant for the oxygenation benefits or to help remove the sediment?
~Do you have any “rules” before you decant?
(let stand up for a certain amount of time? Hold a light to the neck?)
~How do you determine how long you let sit after decanting?
~Decanting typically is with reds- do you decant whites? When and why?
~Are there any wines or regions you suggest NOT decanting?
3. Riddle Time -
The sun bakes them,
The hand breaks them,
The foot treads them,
The mouth tastes them.

The History of Paso Robles
Monday Aug 20, 2018
Monday Aug 20, 2018
This is a short but sweet episode. I wanted to give a little insight into the history of the place that Michael and I have fallen in love with. We visited once and it was love at first sight. We had no clue at that point what this amazing area would mean to us. Counting the days until it is our home full time!
