Inequality in the Wine World
Monday Oct 19, 2020
Monday Oct 19, 2020
Today, I sit down with Pam Riley of Food and Wine Chronicles and discuss the inequities in the wine world. Black Lives Matter is a strong movement and an important one. It is sad to know that people are treated differently just because of the color of their skin. If you listen to this podcast or read my blog, you know how I am a scientist at heart (and by training) . Bill Nye the Science Guy is a hero of mine. If he explained the science behind skin color in less than 2 minutes on Tik Tock, it’s really not very difficult to comprehend. The color of the skin may be different, but we are all a single species. Remember the adage, don’t judge a book by its cover? That is all you are doing if you treat another human differently because of an external feature. Let’s get over it and let’s raise a glass to a day that a wine lover is a wine lover no matter the color of their skin.

There are about 200 producers in the entire DOC, and they focus on one grape! The white grape Turbiana. We had the pleasure of having the brand ambassador for Lugana DOC as our guest host. Susannah Gold of Vigneto Communications shares her in depth knowledge of the DOC with us.

There's Something About Sherry
Monday Oct 05, 2020
Monday Oct 05, 2020
It time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s start exploring the wine glass! On today’s episode, I am diving into the world of Sherry with Certified Sherry Wine Specialist Lucas Paya. Join me as I learn about the fortified wine made from white grapes that are grown near the city of Jerez in Andalusia, Spain. During the conversation, we discuss how Sherry is made primarily from the Palomino grape, is produced in a variety of styles, ranging from light versions like the Fino to darker and heavier oxidized versions such as the Pedro Ximenz as well as everything in between like the Oloroso. Thank you to Charolotte at IT Public Relations for organizing the interview and House of Lustau for providing the samples.

What's the Deal With Celebrity Wines?
Monday Sep 21, 2020
Monday Sep 21, 2020
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I sit down with some of my wine writer friends and we discuss the increasing number of celebrities who are entering the wine business. Are they just slapping their name on a label to help a product sell or are they following their passion and truly wanting to learn what it takes to produce high quality wines. Would you buy a wine simply because a celebrity makes it?
Riddle:
You had me today
Tomorrow you’ll have more
As time passes,
I’m not easy to store.
I don’t take up space
But I’m only in one place
I am what you saw
But not what you see
What am I?
scroll down for the answer!

MoreThan Wine in Paso - We Have Spirits Too!
Monday Sep 14, 2020
Monday Sep 14, 2020
Today, I am taking you, thanks once again to the Paso Wine Alliance and Chris Taranto, on a virtual visit of distilleries in Paso Robles. Everyone knows that Paso makes exceptional wine, but we also make amazing craft beer and now a growing number of distilleries producing incredible spirits.
Join me as I learn about the distilling process from the pros. Aaron Bergh of Calwise Spirits, Alex Villican of ReFind Spirits and Max Udsen of Bethel Rd. Distillery. I love teaching people the process of tasting wine, but that is NOT how you want to approach tasting spirits. I’ll let them tell you the proper way as well as how they incorporate using the outstanding fruit from Paso to make quality spirits. And finally, we get the answer to the age old question of why is wine and beer a percentage in terms of ABV and spirits talked about as proof!
As you are listening, please take a moment to leave me a review of the podcast. Words can’t describe how appreciative I am of all who have left one so far, but I could always use more! The more I get, the more that dang algorithm will suggest me to new listeners!
So unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle, and lets learn about spirits!

Kabar on Winephabet Street
Monday Sep 07, 2020
Monday Sep 07, 2020
Hey everyone thanks for listening in! Today we return to Winephabet Street with another special guest. Edit Bai is the winemaker for Chateau Dereszla in the Tokaj region of Hungary. If you google Kabar, a white grape, Chateau Dereszla is the winery that pops up first. So we thought it was fantastic that we were able to learn about this Hungarian grape from an expert. I’d like to send out a very special thank you to Agnes Nemeth / Creative Writer, Editor, Founder of Hungarianwines.eu for being instrumental in organizing the introduction that allowed us to ultimately record this episode! So köszönöm Agnes!I am sure I completely destroyed the proper pronunciation! So let’s get right to it! It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and lets learn about the white Hungarian grape variety Kabar on Winephabet Street!

Does a High ABV Equate to a Bad Wine?
Monday Aug 31, 2020
Monday Aug 31, 2020
Today I am back with another Paso Hangout thanks to Paso Robles Wine Alliance. We all love wine and what makes wine awesome is, lets face it.. the alcohol! But alcohol can get out to hand.
Listen in as Wes Hagen, winemaker for J. Wilkes Wines and the godfather of Paso Robles, Gary Eberle of Eberle Winery talk about how wines need to be made in a specific way and the high alcohol wines are on their way out. Really? I don’t think so… and neither do they! In reality, balance is what makes the difference and alcohol needs to be part of the formula to create a balanced wine.
Thank you again to the Paso Robles Wine Alliance for putting this conversation together. You can find out more about them by visiting their website pasowine.com. So lets unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and lets listen in as these three discuss alcohol in wine.

Drew Nenow; Nenow Family Wines Paso Robles
Monday Aug 24, 2020
Monday Aug 24, 2020
Today on Allure of the Pour I am sitting down with Drew Nenow of Nenow Family Wines in Paso Robles! I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Drew. We found out we have a lot in common, between growing up with a parent who is an electrician, to both being volleyball coaches… oh and a little thing like being a winemaker in Paso Robles.
I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. If you enjoy this episode, please take a moment to rate and review the podcast. I know I ask every week- but it takes less than a minute and it means so much! Thanks! So now, unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and lets talk Paso Wine!

Sherry; Much More Than Grandma's Sweet After Dinner Drink
Monday Aug 17, 2020
Monday Aug 17, 2020
Jerez is one of the oldest wine growing regions in the world, but in all honesty, I know very little about it. During the WSET Level 2 class, sherry was covered, but very briefly. I have not had many sherries, and I have promised myself that I will attempt to make myself more familiar with it.
So when I heard that there was going to be an episode of Raid (y)Our Cellar dedicated to Sherry, I knew it was one I had to listen in. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. As I learned, there is a Sherry for an occasion and unlike my initial thoughts, it is not all grandma’s sweet after dinner drink. From the dry and light, Fino wines, to the subtly bitter taste of a cold glass of Manzanilla or the sweetness and caramel hints of a Cream. Sherry truly is a wine that can be paired with any food pairing.
So unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle, sit down and enjoy the conversation. Sherry is a wine that is misunderstood by the market and I hope this episode helps you navigate your way through the confusing waters.
